!!! ESS Gets the Green Light !!!
On July 4, 2014 the Swedish Minister of Education and Research Jan Björklund announced that the funding is now 100% secured for the European Spallation Source (ESS). As a result the project now has the green light to start construction, which is planned to begin during the autumn of 2014. This is indeed a great day for Swedish science and very exciting times lie ahead for neutron scatterers all around Europe! More detailed information can be found in the official press releases on the Homepage of ESS as well as the Swedish Government.
This good news further emphasizes the importance for SNSS as an organisation to intensify our efforts towards establishing a stronger neutron scattering community in Sweden. This includes creating a closer collaboration between Swedish universities and the ESS organisation, promoting neutron techniques to industry, as well as supporting a new generation of Swedish neutron scatterers for 2023 when the first experiments are planned to be performed at ESS. A step in this direction will be a planned satellite meeting of SNSS at the IKON7meeting at ESS to be held in Lund on September 16, 2014. More information will soon appear here on the homepage of SNSS. Among other things to be discussed will be the recent decision from the Swedish Government to, through the Swedish Governmental Agency for Innovation Systems (VINNOVA) and the Swedish Research Council (VR), give targeted support for Swedish neutron scattering. The goal is to stimulate the participation of Swedish universities as well as industry in the development and future use of the ESS [official decision as pdf].
Uppsala University course on neutron scattering 2014
Uppsala University offers a course on neutron scattering this spring. The course will be given as a block of lectures together with an excursion to allow students from outside Uppsala to participate with a minimum time traveling. During the first week we have lectures and lessons presented at Uppsala University and given by experts in the fields from the ILL in Grenoble. During the second week there will be an excursion to the neutron center at LLB in Saclay allowing the students to get practical experience. The schedule for the course is attached. Second Baltic Neutron School 2014
The Second Baltic Neutron School (BNS 2014) primarily addresses graduate students, post-doctoral fellows and scientists who are new to the field of neutron scattering. A series of lectures and tutorials by experienced scientists will introduce different neutron scattering techniques for investigations of structure and dynamics of condensed matter in various scientific fields like e.g. nanotechnology, magnetism or biology. The neutron scattering methods covered include quasi- and inelastic scattering, triple axis spectroscopy, small angle scattering, reflectometry, high-pressure experiments or diffraction. Students and young scientists will be given the opportunity to present their own research in short talks and poster sessions.
The school will be held in Tartu, Estonia, from Sunday, May 4 to Thursday, May 8, 2014. Support for attending BNS will be available for students. See flyer
18th Swedish Neutron Scattering Society Meeting (SNSS-18)
The meeting will take place at Chalmers, Chemistry building, lecture hall KA, and start Tuesday April 22nd and end at lunchtime Wednesday April 23rd (see attached schedule).
This is the annual SNSS meeting with the purpose to inform the research community about recent developments in the neutron area, for example at ILL, ISIS and ESS. It is a platform for established as well as young scientists to present their research, highlighting the use of neutrons, and for people with an interest to use neutron scattering techniques in their research. The aim is also to inform about planned teaching activities and to give a representative picture of research activities at different universities.

Please register as soon as possible, at the latest April 10th. Indicate if you want a poster presentation, there will be a poster session at the Meeting. Additional information will be provided upon registration. For registration please contact Carina Pettersson (carina.pettersson@chalmers.se). Please also indicate if you plan to attend the dinner April 22nd when you register, and also inform us about dietary requests.

5th Chalmers-ISIS-ESS Workshop: Neutron Scattering and Materials for Energy Applications
The Workshop will be arranged at Chalmers, Chemistry building, lecture hall KA, and start Wednesday April 23rd at 13:15 and end in the early afternoon Friday 25th (see attached schedule).
The aim of the workshop is to inform about the neutron sources ISIS in UK, and the planned ESS in Lund, and to illustrate the use of neutrons in order to extract information about structure and dynamics in materials. The focus is on materials for energy applications.
The workshop will give us an overview of recent and future developments at ISIS and ESS. There will be sessions with a strong focus on neutron scattering methods but also the importance of electron microscopy and theoretical work will be illustrated. Other sessions will concentrate more on the materials side, often with a link to X-ray or neutron work. There will be specific sessions on for example fuel cell, battery, or hydrogen storage materials. In addition there will be sessions covering layer/interface systems, zeolites used for NOx reduction, and zirconium alloys related to the nuclear industry.

RMC workshop April 25th 14 to 17 pm
The aim of this workshop will be to give people hand on experience of RMCProfile. Matt Tucker and Helen Playford at ISIS will give a brief presentation and run through a series of tutorial examples that ensure the program is working correctly, how to setup a refinement, how to run the program and finally how to check it give you sensible results. People should bring their own laptops or be will to share with other. It will also be an opportunity to discuss total scattering (aka PDF) and any questions people have.

The 13th conference on Surface X-ray and Neutron Diffraction
The 13th conference on Surface X-ray and Neutron Diffraction will take place from 7th of July to 11th 2014 in Hamburg at DESY. It will highlight exciting new results obtained by surface sensitive X-ray and neutron scattering techniques. The conference has been established as a unique platform for the interaction within the scientific community over the last decades.
The confirmed list of invited speakers including the titles of their talks can be found on the conference web site www.sxns13.de. Additionally, tours of the synchrotron radiation facility PETRAIII and the soft X-ray laser FLASH and the European XFEL will be offered.

Master and PhD course on Neutron Scattering
Uppsala University (Apr. – May 2014, 10 hcp)
Neutrons offer a unique probe to address questions highly relevant to condensed matter research. In addition to the structure also the dynamics as well as magnetism can be studied. This is related to the characteristics of the neutron and the type of interaction with a sample differing from, e.g. x-rays or electrons. In this course the peculiarities and applications of neutron scattering will be presented. Particular emphasis will be on the discussion of the similarities and the complementary of x-ray and neutron scattering for material research. The basic scattering methods and concepts will be addressed theoretically as well as practically. See more here
For complementing the theoretical part the course will include training in writing of proposals as well as an excursion to a scattering center.
NIBB 2014 “Neutrons in Biology and Biotechnology”

The use of neutrons in structural biology has become increasingly powerful and sophisticated in recent years. In particular, over the last decade, improvements in sources, instrumentation and sample preparation have revolutionized the scope of neutron scattering studies of biological systems. Furthermore the use of complementary techniques (such as synchrotron radiation, NMR, EM) now makes neutron scattering one of the most powerful approach in obtaining structural and dynamical information over a wide range of length scales and timescales.
This meeting will focus on highlighting recent results in fundamental biology and biotechnology. The meeting will also consider the future of the field and the implications for the type of science that can be considered as well as for the instruments required.
